According to recent predictions, increased global warming is expected to significantly impact labour capacity and productivity in Southeast Asia by 2045. Rising temperatures will increase the number of unsafe ‘heat stress’ days per year, which will significantly impact vulnerable workers, and have a negative impact on regional economies. Worst hit will be Singapore and Malaysia, which could experience decreases in productivity by up to 25 percent. Expected decreases in productivity will vary across the region, with Indonesia predicted at 21 percent, Cambodia and the Philippines at 16 percent, and Thailand and Vietnam at 12%. The risks to business – and the huge opportunities ...

InterMET Asia – Extreme Weather Expo offers a unique opportunity to better understand two things about how extreme weather will impact business profitability:

Firstly, the risks and hazards that increasingly extreme weather events and climate change pose for public and private enterprises and how to manage and mitigate them.

Secondly, the enormous business opportunities that exist in the development of products and services, and in public-private sector engagement to manage and mitigate the risks and impact of extreme weather and climate change.

No other event attempts to deal with extreme weather and climate change in this way.

The InterMET Asia – Extreme Weather Expo conference programme covers:

  • The collection and analysis of data, and computer modelling.
  • The provision of bespoke forecasting services to industry and government.
  • The design of resilient and adaptable business models, supply chains, infrastructure and public services.
  • The use of index-based insurance to manage weather-related business and investment risks.
  • Impact on areas ranging from energy, agriculture and healthcare, to transport, retail, tourism and the urban environment.
  • The new market opportunities being opened up by extreme weather and climate change.

And, in co-operation with the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR), we'll also be highlighting the importance of private – public sector engagement to the development of this market.
